Physical and chemical properties:
Sodium tripolyphosphate is a white, glossy granular powder with a melting point of 622°C. It is highly soluble in water and exhibits significant chelating capacity for metal ions such as calcium and magnesium. This compound can soften hard water, convert suspensions into solutions, and possesses weak alkalinity without corrosive properties.
Applications:
Sodium tripolyphosphate is used as the main auxiliary agent in synthetic detergents, a soap synergist, a water softener, a leather pretanning agent, a dyeing auxiliary agent, an effective dispersant for the treatment of suspensions such as paint, kaolin, magnesium oxide, calcium carbonate drilling mud, an oil stain preservative for papermaking, and a catalyst for organic synthesis. It is also used in petroleum product refining, the storage of rubber latex, and as a dispersant and solubilizer in the metal industry and pharmaceutical industry. Additionally, sodium tripolyphosphate has extensive applications in synthetic rubber, the food industry, and poultry processing.
