Physical and chemical properties:
Sodium stannate usually exists in the form of sodium stannate trihydrate (Na₂SnO₃·3H₂O). It is a colorless hexagonal crystal. Due to the presence of [Sn(OH)₆]²⁻ in its solution, the chemical formula of sodium stannate can also be expressed as Na₂[Sn(OH)₆]. At 140℃, sodium stannate trihydrate loses water to become anhydrous sodium stannate. Sodium stannate is prone to hydrolysis to form stannic acid (xSnO₂·yH₂O), and it will turn into β-stannic acid when left standing and heated. Sodium stannate can be obtained by treating cassiterite (SnO₂) with molten caustic soda or soda ash.
Applications:
Sodium stannate can be used as a mordant, a fire retardant and weighting agent for textiles, as well as in the production of glass, ceramics and tin plating, etc.
